History or Rochdale Town Hall
Standing proudly in the heart of Greater Manchester, Rochdale Town Hall is one of Britain's finest examples of Victorian Gothic architecture. Opened in 1871, this magnificent Grade I listed building has over 150 years of fascinating history, making it an incredible location for a ghost hunt.
Designed by architect William Henry Crossland, Rochdale Town Hall was built during the height of the town's industrial prosperity. Its grand halls, intricate stonework, stained-glass windows and imposing clock tower reflect the wealth and ambition of Victorian Rochdale.
However, the building has witnessed its share of darker moments. In April 1883, a devastating fire destroyed the original clock tower, which was later replaced by a magnificent new tower designed by Alfred Waterhouse.
Throughout its history, Rochdale Town Hall has housed a police station, magistrates' court and holding cells, where countless individuals faced the uncertainty of the Victorian justice system. These historic connections add an intriguing dimension to the building's mysterious atmosphere.
Following an extensive restoration, Rochdale Town Hall reopened in 2024, preserving its remarkable architecture and historic character for future generations.
