History of Wortley Top Forge
Dating back to 1640, Wortley Top Forge was built by Sir Francis Wortley.
Celebrated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument Wortley Top Forge is now renowned for its history in iron-working in Britain and more specifically South Yorkshire. Remaining as the only surviving water-powered heavy wrought iron forge.
Worley Top Forge was a working site until 1924 due to downturn in steel production. It was then taken over by the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society in 1953 and they have maintained the site to this day.
