Ghosts of George Jarvis School
Things are often seen moving around the different rooms and areas within the building. Disembodied legs have been witnessed walking along the corridors and very loud bangs and distressing wailing sounds have been heard by those visiting this heart-wrenching building.
There is said to be an incident concerning a young boy who was once locked in the bell tower for punishment. His spirit is still said to haunt the top floor of the building. In fact George Jarvis himself is said to plague the long corridor where he walks up and down scrutinising those who visit. After all it was his money that was used to build and fund the school against his will.
There is also the tale of Daniel, a gentleman who died on horseback, who is rumoured to continually visit the school after spending so much of his life helping to construct it.
Who will you encounter as you spend time investigating this former boarding school. Walk around the corridors, numerous class rooms and bathrooms, abandoned dorms and dark sinister cellars.
History of George Jarvis School
In the quiet Farming countryside of Herefordshire sits the imposing landmark of this gothic Grade II listed School. George Jarvis School was built in the late 1850’s and was once known as The Worlds End Lodge and has since become The George Jarvis School. The school was funded by the late George Jarvis against his wishes who left his fortune to the poor of Staunton-On-Wye, Bredwardine and Letton in 1793. In fact, in his will George Jarvis stated “My mind and will is that none of the said monies be appropriated in erecting any public buildings whatsoever”.
George Jarvis charity owned the school along with other buildings and houses. The school offered boarding for children to help benefit families who were less fortunate. The School opened its doors in 1862 alongside the first Headmaster Fredrick Ramsay who carried out his duties until 1879. The School then closed in 2010 and has been left as it stands today.
When it was known as The Worlds End lodge, the building had many uses including the American army once being accommodated here. The building changed its use in 1980’s becoming a Youth Hostel. Even then it was renowned for its ghostly apparitions, poltergeist activity and strange occurences.
With over 4 floors, 40 rooms, haunted cellars and some terrifying outbuildings, there are a lot of rooms to be explored during overnight ghotst hunts here.
