Ghosts of The Citadel
With literally hundreds of ghost sightings here it is difficult to work out who or what haunts this Citadel. Through the centuries there are many who have stories to tell made even more believable because they are experienced by more than just a few people. Ghostly shapes appearing from nowhere, sounds of males screaming in the night, gun shots and unearthly dragging sounds coming from deep below in the underground and the hospital.
These are just a few things that you can expect when you get here. You will more than likely leave with your own story to tell but whoever or whatever you experience here will not be for the faint-hearted.
History of The Citadel
The first recorded defences of this imposing Citadel are the Western Heights built in 1779 when the site was first established. These defences were constructed with military labour during the American Civil War and purchased by the Board of Ordnance. They originally purchased just a large area of the ridge. To begin with it is thought that these defences were only going to be temporary fieldworks for infantry and artillery to provide a temporary measure to gain some resistance against potential land assaults and began with small earthworks. However the plans grew more and more ambitious and over the centuries we now have this substantial fortification with both temporary and permanent fortifications built and added to.
With the threat of Napoleon in 1804 the building work was definitely expedited and more fortifications were constructed. The Drop Redoubt and the Citadel were linked by earthworks forming a complete entrenched camp. This camp would serve to protect a small field force to greet any enemy. A garrison was erected by the end of 1805 along with barracks and a hospital.
As you can imagine the history here is rich and vast and well worth researching before embarking on your overnight ghost hunt.
