The Citadel - Dover, Kent
Experience the Hauntings of The Citadel, Dover.

The Citadel in Dover is a Napoleonic Era Fortress which had previously never been open to the public.  It has an immense history and is steeped in historical intrigue dating back to 1779 and including the Napoleonic War.    This vast location expands over a huge area and has so many investigation areas for us to work in.  From prison cells,  turrets, underground tunnels, hospital,  this location is set for a fantastic night of ghost hunting.

Dating back to 1779 during the American War of Independence the history that is recorded here is unfathomable and the layers of ghostly history that we intend to unravel are unimaginable.  This really is set to be a truly remarkable ghost hunt where we unearth the tales of bygone centuries.

We truly believe that this is going to be a ghost hunt like no other.  I think we are all going to need our wits about us as we embark on a night inside this enormous Citadel. The ghostly tales here have no bounds, there are so many eye-witness testimonies where people have been left completely overwhelmed with fear.

There are so many areas to investigate here that you would probably need to return a few times to take in this vast location and explore the many, many elements to this historical site.

You will have the opportunity to do so on a night of ghost hunting with Haunted Happenings. We will do everything we can to elicit that all important evidence and to discover who or what is haunting the buildings here. With so many layers of history to incorporate we think we are going to be overwhelmed with working out the many areas that we plan to work within.

You will be using the most up-to-date ghost hunting techniques along withsome traditional methods and even have time to explore on your own. We willwork with you to get the very best out of the night by working in small groups in a methodical and organised fashion to get some authentic evidence.

Ghosts of The Citadel

With literally hundreds of ghost sightings here it is difficult to work out who or what haunts this Citadel.  Through the centuries there are many who have stories to tell made even more believable because they are experienced by more than just a few people.  Ghostly shapes appearing from nowhere, sounds of males screaming in the night, gun shots and unearthly dragging sounds coming from deep below in the underground and the hospital.

These are just a few things that you can expect when you get here.  You will more than likely leave with your own story to tell but whoever or whatever you experience here will not be for the faint-hearted.

History of The Citadel

The first recorded defences of this imposing Citadel are the Western Heights built in 1779 when the site was first established. These defences were constructed with military labour during the American Civil War and purchased by the Board of Ordnance.  They originally purchased just a large area of the ridge.  To begin with it is thought that these defences were only going to be temporary fieldworks for infantry and artillery to provide a temporary measure to gain some resistance against potential land assaults and began with small earthworks.  However the plans grew more and more ambitious and over the centuries we now have this substantial fortification with both temporary and permanent fortifications built and added to.

With the threat of Napoleon in 1804 the building work was definitely expedited and more fortifications were constructed.  The Drop Redoubt and the Citadel were linked by earthworks forming a complete entrenched camp. This camp would serve to protect a small field force to greet any enemy.  A garrison was erected by the end of 1805 along with barracks and a hospital.

As you can imagine the history here is rich and vast and well worth researching before embarking on your overnight ghost hunt.
