History of The Underground Victorian Lock Up
On New Year’s Day 1838, Hereford City Council purchased land on what was once Little Gaol Lane for £550, sealing the fate of a street that would forever be renamed Gaol Street… a name it still bears, heavy with its past.
Construction began on 9th November 1841, led by architects Trehearne and Duckham. For three long years, rough stone walls rose from the earth, forming a grim central block flanked by two looming wings. Behind the prison lay exercise yards where inmates were once marched in silence, all enclosed by towering walls designed not just to imprison but to intimidate.
The City Gaol operated for just 33 years before closing in 1877 under the Prisons Act, which merged the city’s prisons and placed them under national control. But the building did not rest. Instead, its cells echoed with new authority. The North-West wing became a City Police Station, while the South-Eastern side was transformed into a fire-engine house.
Later, the fire station was demolished and what remained became the City Magistrates Court, dispensing justice where punishment once ruled. That too fell silent in 2001 leaving behind a shell of stone soaked in suffering, power and secrets.
You won't just walk through history, you step into it. Behind these walls, something still lingers. And now you’re invited to face whatever never truly left.
