Ghosts of Middleton Hall
The infamous Grey Lady of Middleton Hall is thought to be the most interactive spirit that has been encountered here. She has been seen by staff and visitors on so many occasions and has even had conversations with visitors who have believed her to be somebody dressed up.
Others have heard dragging sounds whilst some have experienced things being moved. People have heard voices coming from other rooms when nobody is there and taps, bangs and doors closing have also been a common experience. Items seem to disappear and then inexplicably reappear.
History of Middleton Hall
The history of Middleton Hall is vast and varied. It spans over one thousand years and over the centuries the hall has changed itself, adapting to its new owners. With so many stories to tell and so many inhabitants it is difficult to contain it in a few paragraphs.
However, to give you a taste of who or what you may encounter here, there is a Tudor explorer, a Duchess renowned for her love of music, The Commander of the Norman Cavalry at the Battle of Hastings, a Medieval Lord who escaped a prison sentence and last but not least two famous naturalists, Sir Francis Willoughby and his friend.
The hall itself is a Grade II listed building and has been owned and lived in by many famillies over the centuries. The first to own this haunted hall were the De Freville family who then passed this onto Willoughby family through marriage.
The hall sadly fell into disrepair and was purchased by The Trust in the 1980s. Middleton Hall is now being brought back to its former glory and many parts of the building seem as authentic now as they must have done in their creation.
