History of Valence House
Spine tingling history stretching over seven centuries of this last remaining remnants of Dagenham's five manor houses.
Following the departure of the May family, the future of Valence House was in doubt, and it remained vulnerable for several decades. During the 1920s the majority of Dagenham’s historic buildings, mainly farmhouses and cottages, were demolished to make way for the Becontree Estate – a ‘garden city’ with 24,000 houses to accommodate a population of 120,000 people. In the end, Valence House owed its survival to practical considerations. Well-looked after by the May family, it was the only suitable building available on the growing estate to house large groups of people.
In late 1925 it was decided that Dagenham Parish Council (the predecessor of the Dagenham Urban District Council (DUDC)) would start holding its meetings at Valence House. The building was described as lit by gas and without any furnishings or equipment. The 18th century parlour on the first floor was fitted out with a large table and chairs and became the council chamber.
In 1929 Dagenham’s first librarian, John G. O’Leary, was appointed. With a keen interest in history he began to collect documents and objects relating to the history of Dagenham, some of which were put on display in Valence House.
In recognition of its rare survival, Valence House was listed Grade II in 1954. Buildings of this grade are defined as being of particular importance with more than special interest and just 5.8% of listed buildings are Grade II.
Between 2008 and 2010 Valence House underwent a major multi-million pound redevelopment project which saw the creation of 13 new interactive gallery spaces telling the history of Barking and Dagenham from pre-history to modern day.
