Glossary of Paranormal and ghostly Terms To help you understand the paranormal we have compiled a list of the most common terms used in the world of the paranormal and ghost hunting.
Lemures – This term is from Roman mythology, the larvae or lemures (singular lemur) were the spirits of the dead; they were the malignant version of the lares. Some Roman writers describe lemures as the common name for all the spirits of the dead, and divide them into two classes: the lares, or the benevolent souls of the family, which haunted and guarded the domus or household, and the larvae, or the restless and fearful souls of wicked men. The more common idea was that the Lemures and Larvae were the same. They were said to wander about the night to torment and frighten the living. Ley Lines – These are hypothetical alignments of a number of places, such as ancient monuments and megaliths. Their existence was suggested in 1921 by the amateur archaeologist Alfred Watkins. It is also said that many of Britain’s haunted buildings sit on the cross roads of Ley Lines and that ghost are more likely to be seen due to the energies produced at these points. Light anomalies – These are the appearances of unexplained lights or incandescent forms that appear for no apparent reason. It is said that these the early stages of a spirit manifestation or a spirit trying to make contact. Luminous Body – This is said to be a faint light or glow in a dead body which signifies the soul’s impending departure to the afterlife.
