Guys Cliffe House derives its name from Guy of Warwick, a once humble servant to the Saxon Earl of Warwick. He fell in love with the Earl’s daughter and in order to obtain her hand he achieved fame and fortune to become worthy of her. Guy is thought to have retired to a hermitage on the site, where he lived in the natural cavern complex. This legend began the founding of a chantry which was established in 1423 dedicate to St Mary Magdalene by the Bishop of Warwick.
After the dissolution of the Monastries by Henry VIII, Guys Cliffe House passed into private hands. The house was started by Samuel Greatheed and dates back to 1751. It was sold in 1947 with the intentions of it being converted into a hotel but this venture did not take off and the house was left vacant falling into disrepair. Eventually Guys Cliffe House was bought by Aldwyn Porter and the Chapel itself was released to the Freemasons. This connection still exists to this day with Guys Cliffe House becoming a Masonic Lodge. It has also been the location for the filming of Sherlock Holmes and whilst filming a fire broke out damaging the building. It has been given Grade II listed status by English status.
Guys Cliffe House is the elite in terms of paranormal activity. It has many areas for investigation and never fails to impress. The underground chambers are particularly active and trigger objects placed there have been moved on more than one occasion. The intensity in this particular area is overwhelming and people have left feeling terrified. Lights have been seen in the basement parlour and the atmosphere is this area has been highly dramatic on many levels.
The Chapel is the oldest part of the building and perhaps the most haunted. Heavy footsteps have been heard walking upstairs and the scraping sound of furniture has often been witnessed. In fact the activity here is not to be taken lightly and one guest was slapped in the face.
Guys cave is down in the lower walk and the pre-chamber has been the location for a lot of poltergeist activity. It is absolutely dark in this area and the atmosphere is overwhelmingly petrifying. Many light anomalies have been seen here and the energy has been described as distinctly negative with people coming out saying that they feel unwell.
There is so much paranormal activity at Guys Cliffe House that it is far too much to mention here. This is definitely a location where you have to go and see for yourself. There are many areas where you can carry out lone vigils and spend some time having your very own experience of the paranormal. All we would say is to come forewarned as this is a very scary location and even those that feel that they are very brave in these situations could find themselves way out of their comfort zones.
