The Pleasley Mills were built alongside the River Meden at Pleasley Forge in 1784 under the ownership of William Hollins. The workforce were made up of small children who were treated appallingly with cruelty and mistreatment ranging from beatings and starvation. It stopped operating as a mill in 1987 and today the building is used for a number of small businesses.
There are many sightings at this location and they are not just from the time of the Mill itself. The cave below was home to prehistoric inhabitants who have also been sighted by visitors and workers on many occasions. Some of the more regular sightings include the male ghost in the Dye Room and more famously Dick Turpin who has been seen on the road outside the Mills. Florence Nightingale is also said to have made an appearance and this is not surprising when you consider that she grew up in this area.
Bearing in mind that there were many murders at the Mills it is not hard to see why there are many restless souls haunting this location. The audible phenomena has included grunting sounds, machinery noises and a multitude of unexplained cries. The male energy of who is thought to be a Supervisor makes men feel intimated. He is said to have committed rape and murder and his evil actions have led to the murdered woman feeling distraught and showing herself on the top floor. There have also been many sighting of the lower half of bodies walking along through the floors.
Interestingly during 1786 Hayman Rooke, an archaeologist, excavated the grounds and found Roman Coins. The cave underneath the Mill threw up some amazing discoveries such as Rhinoceros and Mammoth bones. It is thought that this has demonstrated evidence of a prehistoric tribe who inhabited the cave. There is so much mystery surrounding these findings and why was the house built over this prehistoric cave?
