What do you do on a ghost hunt?

Well we take small groups of people into haunted locations in the hope we witness evidence of the paranormal. The evening will start with a welcome talk from the host and then he or she will lead you around the location on a history tour. This has two benefits, the first being you will get to hear a little about the history and reported sightings in the various areas and secondly this is your chance to get your bearings and become familiar to where you will be spending the evening. You will then be given time to do your own vigils and then brought back together and joined with the medium for the evening who will introduce the spirits and ghosts that they sense around us at that time.

You will then be split into smaller groups and undertake various experiments and vigils to see if we can get anything paranormal to happen.

What happens if we get scared?

Being scared isn't something to be ashamed of and you wont be laughed at and humiliated either. I'm not afraid to tell you that even to this day there are occurances that happen that take me by surprise and I'm the medium! All I will say is stick it out because it is worth it when your fright is rewarded with a sign from the spirit world. If it really does get too much for though rest assured that you are in great hands and we will look after you.

Are there people dressed up that jump out the shadows?

Any team, group or business that employs actors to fake any evidence isn't worth calling themselves a paranormal group let alone charge for events billed as genuine. We believe that any evidence that is witnessed on these events is genuine and believe me I have been stood in a cold castle at 3 in the morning and not a thing is happening..But thats the chance you take, but all it takes is one thing to happen and I will guarantee you will be hooked.

What do I need to take with me?

Warm clothing...some of the locations we visit have no heating, windows, fires etc so plenty of layers after all you can take them off if you get hot. Sensible shoes or trainers that are comfortable, If it is an outdoor location then some waterproofs would be very handy indeed. A torch for when you are moving around in the dark, Camera, camcorder and any medications that you usually take...ie asthma preventatives.

Ghost Hunting Equipment in more detail

So this could be your first time ghost hunting and want to know what equipment you should use. I have put a list together of the most essential items and a description of their users.

  1. Probably the most important piece of equipment is the everyday torch. When ghost hunting you are almost certainly in the dark, the lights of the building are turned out as this is said to encourage the ghost and spirits to manifest as they feel more comfortable in the dark and this also enhances your senses. So finding your way round could be difficult or at least dangerous without one.

  2. Cameras are another essential item. What type of camera to use is up to you whether it is a digital or a 35mm film camera. A lot of sceptics say the digital is easy to fake and dismiss images taken by them, where as a 35mm disposable camera may only have a limited number shots on the film, but you at least have the negatives which can be used as evidence. The camera can record images of orbs, misting and shadowy shapes from by spirits and ghosts.

  3. Camcorders can be used on a ghost hunt, these being used to capture movement, sounds and other paranormal activity such as orbs, light anomalies and the manifestations of spirits or ghosts. Camcorders with a 0 lux can be used in almost total darkness and with the addition of an inferred light source can be used in zero light. Sony have a range of camcorders suited to ghost hunting, but beware they can vary in price, with the higher end spec camcorders nearing £1000.

  4. Digital sound recording equipment is becoming more popular on ghost hunts; these are used to record EVA (electronic voice phenomena). Recording equipment that uses tape tend to pick up the noise of the mechanism, which can lead to false recordings. When using digital recorders try and get one that has an option for an external mic source. This then can be placed away from the recorder to eliminate any interference the unit may pick up.

  5. Another piece of equipment I find a lot of people tend not to bring is a note pad and pen. These should be used to record readings from EMF meters, noises and sightings along with the time of the occurrence. This then comes in handy when at the end of the night you all gather to discuss any sightings, noise or even light anomalies. Accurate records are a key to a successful ghost hunt.

Remember ghost hunting can be fun and at times you may have the most terrifying experience of your life.

And the last thing...an open mind!

I would like to thank the team who was on the ghost hunt at the Golden Fleece in York for a very memorable time. not only was the night enjoyable but also very interesting to. I have learnt alot about myself during the night at the Golden Fleece and am now going to look into developing the skills that I learnt to. Andy the medium was fantastic as well as the other medium that came along. the Golden Fleece proved to be well and truely haunted by many different spirits. The whole team did really well and the event was very well organised and ran smoothly.

once again thank you so much for a great night and I am hoping to see you all at a future event
