Glossary of Paranormal and ghostly Terms

To help you understand the paranormal we have compiled a list of the most common terms used in the world of the paranormal and ghost hunting.

Amulet – This is an item which has the power to ward of spirits. Such items can include crosses and lucky charms

Angel – an angel is a protective messenger shielding you from harm. Sometimes an angel can be mistaken for a ghost.

Apparitions – Have been recorded throughout history and take the form of human or animal. They are properly one of the rarest forms of ghost to capture on film; they are also one of the easiest forms to fake on modern day photographic equipment and computers. With this technology it makes it hard to prove or disprove the existence of an apparition. Never the less there have been many a reported sighting from boats, cars and trains and other everyday objects as well as human and animal forms. Not all apparitions are in forms of solid bodies but can also be a noise or something that is felt.

Apport – This is the transference of an article from an unknown source, to you, or another place by unknown means. The item can be anything, from coins and jewellery from ancient times, to modern objects such as watches and keys. This normally happens with the assistance of a spirit in the company of a medium.

Astral Body – This refers to the concept of a subtle body which exists alongside the physical body, as a vehicle of the soul or higher consciousness. It is usually understood as being of an emotional nature and, as such, it is equated to the desire body or emotional body. It has been known that other have seen an astral body during an out-of-body experience or a near-death experience.

Astral Plane – can also be known as the astral world or desire world, which can be most certainly described as a level of awareness in the celestial world. This would also include its own standards and occupants.

Atmospheric Apparition – This type of ghost is said not to be a real ghost but an imprint of a person that’s as died and has been left behind in the environment which are said to be replayed over and over showing an event from the tragic past.

Aura – This is the energy field of luminous multicoloured radiation surrounding a person or object as a cocoon or halo.

Automatic Writing – This is the process, or product, of writing material that does not come from the conscious thoughts of the writer but occurs when a spirit or ghost takes control of the pen and writers hand to form a message.
