Ye Olde Salution Inn has been the haunt of many regulars for years. Built in 1240 AD it certainly is a legend in its own right. The first building on this site belonged to a Tanner who had a real cottage industry going on here. In 1440 it is recorded as being owned by Mr. John Asastre as a private dwelling.
It was not known how long he had it for but what is known is that it became a pub called The Salutation until 1649 when the Puritans came to power and formed the Commonwealth Government. They were unhappy with the fact that the Inn had a pub sign showing the Archangel Gabriel saluting the Virgin Mary. They insisted that this was changed and the Landlord, not wishing to lose his licence renamed the pub 'Soldier and Citizen'. In 1660 however, the monarchy was restored and the Landlord bought back the old name of the pub but the sign graphic was changed to a handshake.
After the Thoroton Excavation Society had investigated the 9th century caves in 1937 they thought that they had probably been inhabited by Saxon Folk. The Salutation has always been known to be haunted and it was at this time that the ghost of a young 4 year old girl was encountered. Over many years she has been seen and heard on many occasions. The caves at the Salutation Inn are so frightening that people really struggle to stay in them for any length of time. Even the bravest and most hardened ghost hunter has been terrified. People seem to talk about 'an experience' yet won't explain what the experience was. They just refuse point blank to go back down to the deepest level.
We are committed to have that 'experience' and want you to share it with us, if you dare. We will begin the night in the caves and cellars where we have exclusive access to see whether we will encounter the terrifying fear that everybody else seems to have. We will then have access to the pub itself where we can discover what lies in wait for us at Ye Olde Salutation Inn.
