Built in 1823 on the site of the former 12th Century Fortress, Jethart Castle, this Victorian jail housed men, women and children but was used mostly as a debtors prison. It is now a museum and it has certainly got a reputation for its infamous hauntings.
The conditions here were dismal and the hardship and cruelty suffered by inmates was indescribable. No wonder that there are many malign spirits here who have a grudge to bear. The dark entities witnessed here have terrified many people over the years and Jedburgh Jail is now more renowned for its ghosts than anything else.
The Jail itself closed in 1886 and those that survived the barbaric conditions with transported to newer and more up to date prisons throughout Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The harshness of Jedburgh Jail can be felt instantly and I would defy anybody not to feel an overwhelming sadness when they enter.
Some of the activity that has been witnessed has made your hair stand on end, from unusual lights to full bodied apparitions and poltergeist activity.
This is a fantastic place for us to investigate but perhaps not so fantastic for all those who once resided here.
