Built around the 19th Century, Avenue House was originally owned by the Bishop of London. This very haunted Grade II listed Mansion definitely has an interesting past, both historically and paranormally. It has a very colourful history which lends itself well to speculation when attempting to name the spirits and ghosts inhabiting the building and of course the grounds surrounding it.
The lands have been passed through various famous hands from the Knights Templars to whom it was originally granted in the 1200’s to Henry VIII who seized the Avenue House and their Estates in 1540. In 1782 the land was acquired by Thomas Allen and one of his relative’s Rev. Edward Cooper built a property on the land in 1859. This was named Avenue House. This was bought in 1874 by Henry Charles Stephens who left the Mansion to the people of Finchley on his death in 1918. Incidentally Stephens had the nickname of ‘inky’ due to the fact that his father was the inventor of the famous blue-black ink.
The House was formally opened to the public in 1928 and has been used by the People of Finchley as bequested by Stephens. Unfortunately in 1989 the House was badly damaged by a fire. However, this has served to ensure that its restoration has been done to such a standard that it now represents a wonderful building which has retained most of its original character.
Ghostly goings on have been reported here for a long time and have become more frequent over the recent past. It is reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in London with stories appearing in the local press such as The Hendon & Finchley Times.
Ghostly sightings have included the apparition of a lady thought to be one of the former Governesses of Avenue House who still patrols the Mansion and grounds on a regular basis and has been seen by many people. She is especially sighted when any work is being carried out by the workers at the time. Mysterious footsteps have been heard and people have reported feeling icy cold or red hot for no apparent reason. Investigations have recorded cold spots and light anomalies. Some of these light anomalies are so big that they have been seen by the naked eye.
Feelings of being touched by invisible hands are a regular occurrence amongst guests at this haunted mansion along with whispering and distant sounds of crying. Who will you meet? Will you last the night? Can you carry out your own vigil in a haunted area? Join us and confront your own fears at Avenue House on Friday 13th.

What a FANTASTIC night!!! Much better then I had ever imagined. Avenue House was an amazing venue and the team were brilliant. The night was planned perfectly, lots of different experiences with each team member as well as being given time to explore the location on our own. I would highly recommended this experience to all whether you are a keen ghost hunter or just for a night of fun.
