Margam Castle in Port Talbot was built relatively recently as the family home of the Talbots. Although the ruins of a Cisterian Chapel are still very visible on the site. The Castle is one of many “mock” castles built in the gothic revival period. It was commissioned in 1830 by Christopher Rice Talbot and constructed over a 10 year period. The architect in charge of the design of the Castle and its estate was Thomas Hopper but Talbot took a keen interest in overseeing all of the construction and ensured that he added his own signature to the building encouraging the architect to borrow elements from Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire. This was the ancestral family home of the Talbots.

The Castle was also visited by one of his cousins, the famous photographer William Henry Fox. He featured the Castle as an image in some of his early photographic experiments. The Castle was lived in by The Talbot Family until it was eventually sold in 1941 to David Evans-Bevan.

It is documented that British and American troops were stationed in the Castle at some point around this period. David Evans-Bevan found the Castle far too big to live in and after attempts at selling it to any interested organisation failed, it fell into disrepair. It was eventually bought by the local authority and opened to the public in 1977. It was not until it then became damaged by a fire that serious restoration work began on the building. The programme of restoration of the Castle saw the revival of many important features. Today it is a Grade I listed building under the care of Port Talbot Council.

This is an extremely active and haunted location. When the Most Haunted Team visited here in July 2006 they picked up on the murderous and sinister activity inside the Castle and outside in the grounds.

In 1898 the Gamekeeper, Robert Scott, was murdered by a poacher and there have been sightings of his ghost on a regular basis haunting the castle corridors and gothic staircase. There have also been Unexplained noises heard almost daily. The sounds of children singing can be heard upstairs. There is the shadow of a dark male figure seen moving around frequently. Footsteps have been heard clearly walking along the flagstoned floor. A blacksmith has been seen curiously inside the Castle and horses have been heard in the courtyard.

This has been a ghost hunters delight for almost 160 years. The activity is frequent and terrifying. This is a very haunted location and we feel that the activity is intense so be warned. Join Haunted Happenings on the trail of the ghosts of Margam Castle.

Testimonial

I just wanted to thank-you for an amazing night at Blair Street Vaults.. of all the events ive been on, this was by far the best and my first with Haunted Happenings. Ive been a developing medium for three years now and I have never before experienced such activity.

When you conducted the glass movng experiment with the group, ive never seen/felt the glass move with such force and accompanied with the dark spectre who was clear to see in the room on more than one occasion and on-command, the moans and groans clear to hear and the stool being moved next to me by an unseen hand was just the beginning of the nights event.

Down in the vaults we made a circle of hands and you talked the group through building up the energy and I was amazed to experience the vortex and see with my own eyes, stones which we had thrown 10-15ft into the vaults and asked to be returned, clearly being thrown back at us. When the group saw (what we thought to be) torch lights but resembled a swinging tavern lamp at the far end of the vault, when I went to investigate, shouting out for whom was there, i was astonished to realised there wasnt a single soul in sight and where the lights had emanated from was a wall....

By far the biggest experience for me was when you conducted the table tipping I could clearly see everyone's finger tips lightly on the table yet this heavy based table was literally dancing on each of its legs and jumping away from us every so often...incredibly impressive and i thought you did an amazing job of keeping the whole thing together, people who were initally frigthened, you reassured and the group bonded very quickly due to the good nature and professionalism conducted. There was a real lets-go-find-some-ghosts attitude with no frills or even the slightest hint of performance and i believe that due to the efforts of yourself and of the group being collectively involved, we were all well rewarded with an paranormal evening i shall never forget.

It was a real pleasure to meet you and the team Hazel and Elle I must say was a real kind hearted, geniune and very modest medium who worked extremely hard for us all to help bring the evening together nicely. I really cannot wait for the next HH event, please keep up the good work !!...
