Witching Hour at Oxford Castle - Monday 31st October 2011
Join Haunted Happenings on a horrific journey of fear and misery as we take you into the dark crypt and foreboding cells of Oxford Castle. This Ghost Fest Event at Halloween is set to unnerve even the hardiest ghost hunter as we carry our midnight vigils, séances and some amazing experiments at this dark and sinister location
The 900 year old crypt is a very daunting place to be but not as daunting as the haunted tower which is terrifying and is one of those places where you want to get out of as quickly as possible.
Built in 1071 by Robert d’Oilly, Oxford Castle was in existence as a prison up until as recently as 1996. The last public hanging at the prison was in 1863 and the last hanging within the prison walls was in 1952. It has so much history that it would take forever to relay this to you here. However a visit to www.oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk would give you a full background and an in-depth history to whet your appetite.
In order to discover for yourselves some of the myths and legends of the Castle you will have to join us on a chilling overnight ghost hunt.
There is the 'Oxford Castle Curse' described as the Black Assize of 1577. Having had his ears cut off, Rowland Jenkes pronounced a curse on the court, the jury and the city. Hundreds of people then died mysteriously within the space of a few weeks following his outburst. Sinister human remains were recently discovered in a ditch beside the Motte which has been dated back to the late 16th Century. Although there are no absolute conclusions it is thought that they could belong to the victims of Rolwland Jenke’s Curse.
There is a very strong possibility that you may meet the ghost of Mary Bland. Mary was tried and hanged at Oxford Castle in 1752. Her ghost has been seen frequently on the Castle Mound by many people including those passing by. Many horrific sights have been seen including two sinister figures dressed in black. Many staff members will not walk around alone due to the terrifying feeling that they experience throughout the Castle and Prison even during the day.
Poltergeist and unexplained activity has been seen on many occasions, there as also been damage and movement of objects. White mists have been seen coming from nowhere and then disappearing, screaming and wailing has come from within the prison walls when there is nobody around.
You will have the opportunity of uncovering the truth of all these terrifying facts when you join Haunted Happenings on our ghost hunt here. We will have exclusive access to the Castle and Prison, carrying out vigils, séances and experiments in all the haunted areas. We will also be able to take you up onto the Castle Mound where you may see the figure of Mary Bland.
You will be given a professional guided tour of the location where you will get your bearings and learn about the horrible facts surrounding Oxford Castle and Prison.
You will then be taken through the location by our professional Medium who will pinpoint the most active areas for our investigations.
You will be able to join our workshop where we will teach you how to use our equipment including dowsing rods and crystals as well as more modern methods such as EMF and Temperature Thermometers.
The Haunted Happenings Team will then work with you through the night in an attempt to elicit some real paranormal activity. You will also be given time alone to carry out your own personal vigils or experiments.
