Ghost Hunts at The Yorkshire Forge Cottages - Thursday 7th November 2013
The Iron worker’s Cottages at Wortley Forge in Sheffield date back to 17th century and have gained a reputation for being very haunted. Recent evidence even suggests that Cistercian Monks may have settled in this area as early as 11th century and ghostly figures, sinister shadows and apparitions have frequently been seen in the Cottages, Forge buildings and surrounding area.
The Iron Worker Cottages and Forge buildings are largely 18th Century in date, but records of Iron making in the area go back to 1621 when a ‘Bloomery’ is mentioned. Extensive alterations are known to have been made in 1713 and there is a stone still visible today with this date, carrying the initials M.W – probably representing Matthew Wilson, a manager of the Forge at the time. Wortley Forge eventually closed down, the Cottages lay empty and nature began to reclaim the land, with the Lower Forge now almost lost. However, the spirits of the people who lived and worked in these buildings still linger and staff at the Forge have frequently seen shadows walking around the area and reported hearing noises coming from areas where no one is working.
During ghost hunts at the Wortley Iron Workers Cottages we have experienced Poltergeist activity, heavy footsteps on the flagstone floors and extreme drops in temperature that could not be explained. People have also reported feelings of being watched and even touched while in the rooms and objects have mysteriously disappeared, then reappeared the following morning after the building has been locked up all night.
Your ghost hunt at Wortley Iron Workers Cottages will give you the opportunity to investigate this daunting location and you will have access to the following areas:
• 2 workers Cottages
• Forge Building
• Workshop / Engineering Building
Ghost hunts at the Cottages are rare and we will conduct various experiments throughout the night including Ouija board, table tipping & glass divination to see if we can connect with the spirits that reside here. Working in small groups you will partake in Séances and Vigils in the most active areas throughout the night and you may even choose to spend time alone with the spirits for a lone vigil in part of the location – if you are feeling brave.
In the 1800s a previous owner of the Forge wrote a book that included ‘the Haunted Happenings of the Forge’……perhaps he knew then we were coming? Maybe he will even be there with us!
Numbers are strictly limited for an intimate investigation so book now to secure your places.

Hi, and thanks to Haunted Happenings for an enjoyable, memorable and interesting night. This was our first such event and we weren't sure what to expect, but it is certainly something we will look to do again in the near future.
We were impressed by the balance struck between good humour and serious investigation and between the freedom to "go our own way" and the opportunity to work as a group.
A great success. Look forward to seeing you again
