Ordsall Hall was once a moated Tudor Mansion and although the oldest parts were built during the 15th Century there has been a house on the site for over 800 years. It was about 1335 when the Manor of Ordsall came into the posession of the Radclyffe family but Sir John Radclyffe did not become the legal owner of Ordsall Manor until 1354. Sir John and his son Richard took over much of the area surrounding the Manor including a chapel.
The Manor was modernised during the Radclyffe ownership and shows hallmarks of each time period throughout the 300 years that they lived there. During the civil war the Hall was in the hands of Sir Alexander Radclyffe and because he was a Royalist he was subsequently imprisoned and suffered severe financial hardship. This meant that John, his son and heir, was unable to maintain or live in the Mansion for much longer and it was sold to Colonel John Birch in 1662.
The Mansion was sold many times during the next century. By the last quarter of the 19th Century the Hall was no longer moated but surrounded by fields and woods. It was purchased by the Salford Corporation in 1959 and opened to the Public in April 1972 as a period House and Local History Museum.
