Most Haunted Location - Michelam Priory

Michelam Priory is a historic building which sits deep in the Sussex countryside. It boasts England’s longest medieval water-filled moat. The house itself dates back to 1229 when the Priory was founded. When King Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution in 1537 the Church of The Holy Trinity was destroyed and the House underwent various transformations including the addition of an extensive Tudor wing.

You can trace the property’s religious origins through the many artefacts on display including furniture and tapestries.

The Water-Mill on the property has recently been refurbished with the assistance of grants obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Documented evidence shows that there was milling at Michelam Priory from 1434.

The history of this building is very colourful in terms of hauntings. In fact it is said to be one of the most haunted locations in the South of England. There is one figure in particular which evokes a lot of sadness in ghost hunters and it is that of a little girl who is said to hide in the Priest Hole at the top of the main stairs. The Priest Hole is hidden in the wooden panelling and she hides there because she is allegedly being chased by Thomas Sackville a previous owner of the Priory.

Many visitors have reported seeing other figures at the Priory, such as a Monk who has been seen dressed in robes and wearing a dark hood. His favourite place to haunt is said to be the undercroft. The sad and lonely figure of a maid servant has been seen on many occasions on the stairs and in the main hall area. Other sightings include an unknown lady and a little boy who is said to wander the kitchen area.
