Most Haunted Location - Castle Keep

Castle Keep was built in stone during the reign of Henry II between 1168 and 1178. It was added to in the 13th Century during the reign of King John when an aisled hall was erected in the bailey. A barbican, now known as the black gate, was added to the north gate in the reign of Henry III between 1247 and 1250.

The Keep has been restored on a number of occasions principally in the early 1800’s and again in the 1980’s when crumbling stonework was replaced and the interior cleaned.

The Ghosts of Castle Keep are not well documented. It is known that there have been many sightings and apparitions have been seen on many occasions by visitors. There has also been poltergeist activity here where things have been thrown around the room and small objects such as coins have been thrown at guests during the day.

Eeries voices and ghostly footsteps have been heard echoing through the corridors. Tapping and scratching on the walls has been heard frequently. The laughter of children has been heard in the corridors and the sobbing of a woman has been heard in an area which is thought to have been the drawing room. The clinking of armour has also been heard as has the movement of chains.
